Magnolia x soulangiana
Commonly known as a Tulip tree or Saucer Magnolia.
This winter hardy Magnolia is of exceptional merit and many forms can be found. In our area this tree is often overlooked as it requires an acidic soil. As I have combed many mature gardens in Austin, I have found some excellent examples.
Making your soil acidic is rather easy and with some consistency, it can be accomplished here in Austin. One of my favorite medias to shift soil acidity is coffee grounds. They are very dark brown in color and are free for the asking at most coffee houses. I get my free coffee grounds from Starbucks.
Basics:
1. Hardy to -25 degrees Farenheit.
2. They will grow to about 25' to 30' tall and perhaps 15' to 18' wide. Easily pruned.
3. Mine bloom in late February through early April.
4. Blooms range from White to all variations of pink with some cultivars bordering on purple.
5. Soil ph should be under 6.0. (remember to acidify your Magnolia annually if not twice annually.)
6. Modest water needs, but they do need supplemental summer watering.
While many garden centers will suggest you try other trees, I say that gardening is about cultivating those plants that excite the gardener and in the Spring few trees are more enjoyable to behold....
